'Star Wars' cast list still shrouded in speculation

The cast for Star Wars Episode 7 was announced this week! We all knew that Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, and Mark Hamill would return to the films, but I didn’t know that R2D2, C-3PO, and Chewbacca would too. However, there’s one name among the lineup of new faces that excites me the most, and that name is Andy Serkis.

Aaron and I recently watched the appendices on The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, and it was absolutely fascinating. Not only did it make us want to work on a movie, but it gave deeper insight into the genius of Andy Serkis. It’s easy to separate the final digital result from the grueling work of the actor, so we appreciated watching the process that goes into creating Gollum. The final Gollum is essentially Andy Serkis with a few effects to create the 500 years old look. Serkis threw himself around, jumped onto rocks from all fours, and crashed through rivers to bring us Gollum. It wasn’t a comfortable, easy, or glamorous process. Yet through the pain and hours of labor, Serkis created a cultural phenomenon. Just about everyone knows who Gollum is, and probably knows someone who can imitate him as well. (Ask my dad for his Gollum impression…it once terrified a car-load of high school boys!)

We concluded the appendices with new respect for Andy Serkis. So when I saw his name among the list of new cast members for Star Wars, I was really excited. He’s incredibly talented and dedicated, and no doubt will give his all into his Star Wars role, whatever that may be. The new film will almost be worth seeing simply for his participation alone.

Being a huge Star Wars nerd, however, he’s not the only reason I’ll see the film. Even decades later, I still love Harrison Ford.

There was one name I had been hoping for that was absent from the list – that of Lupita Nyong’o. It was rumored that she talked with J.J. Abrams back in March, which made me very excited. With three days to go, has Abrams made up his mind about a female lead? Wild speculation is making the rounds on the Internet, all focused on the magical date of May 4, when many hope that the name for the female lead will be revealed.

Here’s an idea, Abrams: cast more than one female lead. Cast Lupita Nyong’o, and Maisie Richardson-Sellers, and Saorise Ronan, and Judi Dench. I’d love to see all of them in the film.

The movie is scheduled for release on December 18, 2015. I have high hopes that we’ll be able to thank J.J. Abrams for the newest Star Wars installment, rather than longing for the days when IV, V, and VI were the only Star Wars movies that existed.

Who are you most excited to see in the new Star Wars film? Do you think J.J. Abrams will satisfy the fans?

For now, all I can say is may the fourth be with you.
